Epiphany offers us but another way to enter into the great Christmas mystery. Today we have the opportunity to look at the mystery from the point of view of some other characters. First we have Herod. How does he except the news? He is filled with suspicion, fear, perhaps even envy. His hope is that he may find out where the Child was born, so that he may go and impose his earthly power over the Child. He needs to protect his worldly gains and power from this Child.
Do we ever worry about how complete submission to Christ will shake things up for us? We also have the example of the three kings. These men come to the Child filled with joy, prostrating themselves before Him, and bringing Him gifts. Yes, they brought Him gifts, but who really walks away having received the greatest gift?
